The Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg (Germany) is offering a Postdoctoral Position in Epigenetics in the Independent Laboratory of Dr. Ritwick Sawarkar, which is available for an initial two-year appointment with the possibility of extension.

Our Institute investigates the molecular basis of the immune response and other topics of the developmental biology, such as the origin and differentiation of the immune cells as well as the development of vertebrate embryo. Another main focus of the Institute is Epigenetics. This area deals with inheritable traits, which are not caused by changes in the DNA sequence.

The MPI of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (www.ie-freiburg.mpg.de) is an international research institute, located in a lively university city at the cross-road of Southern Germany, Switzerland and France. The MPI offers a stimulating environment and provides state-of-the-art service facilities.

Your tasks:

The host lab of Ritwick Sawarkar studies how epigenetic regulators such as DNA- and histone modifiying enzymes control expression of molecular chaperones in vivo using mouse models. The research is at the interface of proteostasis and chromatin, two divergent fields that are brought under the same umbrella in our lab. Chromatin-based regulation of chaperone expression is especially relevant in protein misfolding diseases, such as in neurodegeneration and ageing. Since epigenetic regulators can be targeted by drugs, we are directly assessing if these drugs can be used to treat neurodegeneration. How are chaperones regulated in different cell-types and during ageing? Can we change their levels by altering chromatin? These and other exciting questions will be addressed by the postdoctoral position. (See Cell, 2012, TiCB, 2013, Dev Cell, 2010, NSMB 2017). The lab is seeking ambitious and experienced molecular cell biologist/biochemist with creative ideas and motivation to execute them independently. The working language is English.

Your qualifications:

Applicants should have a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in any area of Biology. Experience with molecular techniques is required and some knowledge of genomics, proteomics is desired. Candidates should have a good publication record. Ability to work in a team, communication skills and experience in the supervision of graduate students are an asset.
