The Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany is offering a Postdoctoral Position (f/m/d) with scientific coordination function in the Department of Dr. Asifa Akhtar. The position is available for an initial three-year appointment with the possibility of extension.

The MPI in Freiburg is an international research institute at the cross-roads of Southern Germany, Switzerland and France. The working language is English. State-of-the-art infrastructure and service units, including transgenesis, mass spectrometry, proteomics, flow cytometry, fly and imaging facilities are available.

Our Institute investigates the molecular basis of the immune response and other topics of the developmental biology, such as the origin and differentiation of the immune cells as well as the development of vertebrate embryo. Another main focus of the Institute is Epigenetics. This area deals with inheritable traits, which are not caused by changes in the DNA sequence.


The Akhtar department is looking for a Postdoc with scientific coordination function. The candidate will be responsible for overseeing the current projects, supporting the department infrastructure and staff organization. He/she will also be involved in an independent project to study the contribution of MOF mediated histone acetylation in gene regulation. The candidate will closely work with Dr. Akhtar. In consultation, the candidate will initiate a hands-on mentoring system aimed at junior scientists in the department to help optimize their career development opportunities. The candidate will also be involved in grant writing and assisting with manuscript preparation. For this purpose, the suitable candidate will be required to have excellent communication skills and be fluent in English at a native level. Excellent writing skills are essential, and prior experience in writing and editing scientific manuscripts is required. Previous experience in an editorial role would be highly advantageous.


The suitable candidate should hold a Ph.D. degree in the research area of epigenetics, with preference given to those with experience in the field(s) of research covered by the Akhtar department. The suitable candidate should also be able to work independently as well as effectively collaborate with others. The suitable candidate should also have an interactive and approachable personality and be able to quickly establish good working relationships. Furthermore, the ability to effectively work to tight deadlines and multitask effectively are also required.
