Dr Linda Odenthal-Hesse’s research group investigates the molecular mechanisms of meiotic recombination and their significance for fertility, genome evolution and reproductive isolation. The focus is on how genetic information is precisely recombined during meiosis, how defective germ cells are recognised and eliminated, and how these processes change over the course of evolution. The group combines evolutionary biology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics and reproductive medicine to elucidate the fundamental mechanisms of genome stability and reproduction. Current work focuses in particular on the evolution of recombination mechanisms in vertebrates, on meiotic quality control systems, and on the role of regulatory RNAs in the control of meiosis.
