Curriculum Vitae

María José Pérez Jiménez studied biochemistry in Chile and completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences at the Universidad Autónoma de Chile. Her research has focused on mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and human stem-cell models of neurodegenerative disease, with postdoctoral work at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, and the Imagine Institute of Genetic Diseases in Paris.

Her work has been supported by Becas Chile, DAAD, and an EMBO Long-Term Fellowship. In 2025, she was selected for the Freiburg Rising Stars Academy, which led to her integration into the MPI-IE research environment. She joined Epimetabolism Lab in March 2026, where her current project connects her background in neurodegeneration and mitochondrial biology with chromatin regulation and epigenetic mechanisms of brain cell resilience.

Her project on estrogen-dependent mechanisms of brain cell resilience is supported by the Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies (CIBSS) in Freiburg and the Klaus Tschira Boost Fund (KTB).
