Science Fair 2017

Two days on the Freiburg minster market packed full of science, DNA and exciting insights in modern molecular biology.

More than 1000 bases were paired, dozens of genomes were sequenced and a lot Immunobiology and Epigenetics was explained. This is the summary for the Max-Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics (MPI-IE) of this year’s Science Fair at Freiburg minster market. From 14-15 July the event attracted 10000 visitors who wanted to learn more about research of the university and its clinic as well as research institutes and research-oriented companies from Freiburg and the surroundings.

For the third time the MPI-IE participated in the Science Fair and offered an exciting program on Campus 4. Adults as well as kids had a lot of fun with our mobile sequencing robot, learned more about fruit flies and how they help scientists to uncover the secrets of the DNA and observered fish and fly embryos under the microscope of our imaging facility.

More than 16 hours the Science Fair team of the MPI-IE explained every detail on how the DNA is stored in our cells and how scientists sequence the code of life. PhD students, Post-Docs and technical assistants from various research labs of institute discussed with interested visitors the newest findings. Especially kids loved DNA origami, the Immunobiology game and our “sweet” DNA. During the entire event on Friday and Saturday they paired more than 1000 fruit gum nucleobases and learned that adenine pairs with thymine, and cytosine pairs with guanine by the help of hydrogene bonds.

Because of many request you can download our scientific posters on Immunobiology and Epigenetics that explain the basic principles for each topic (right sidebar). If you need further info material on our immune systems, proteins, DNA, Epigenetics and many more research fields, please visit the MaxWissen website of the Max Planck Society (MPG). There you can download free of charge teaching materials (in German).

If you want to have your own copy of the interesting MaxPlanckResearch magazine (German and English) that provides an overview about all fields of reseach in the MPG you can subscribe – free of charge – on the MPG website.
