The Department of Epigenetics primary scientific goal is to unravel basic epigenetic mechanisms in normal development and disease. The laboratory headed by Thomas Jenuwein focuses on histone modifications and heterochromatin formation. The group investigates single molecule alterations as well as genome-wide signatures for heterochromatin.
From 2008 to 2024, Thomas Jenuwein was Director at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg and headed the Department of Epigenetics.
