MPI-IE, as any other Max Planck Institute, is managed by its directors. Each director is a scientific member of the Max Planck Society e.V. and the head of one of the institute's scientific departments. Together with the head of Administration of the institut they form the Management Board (‘Kollegium’). This is the central decision-making body of the MPI-IE.
The Managment Board meets on a bi-weekly basis and establishes the general scientific and administrative policies as well as long-term developments of the MPI-IE. Both the management board and the administration interact closely with the Max Planck Society in Munich regarding budgetary, personnel, and policy issues. The managing directorship rotates every three years among the department heads of the MPI-IE.
