Rickard Sandberg, Professor of Molecular Genetics at Karolinska Institutet joins the Max Planck Special Guest Lecture Series in May 2023. Talk title: Time-resolved single-cell transcriptomics for improved studies of transcriptional bursting and direct responses to epigenetic perturbations.

The laboratory led by Rickard Sandberg was among the pioneers in the development of single-cell transcriptome sequencing technology, which has since served as the foundation for various other whole-length transcriptome sequencing methods in the field of single-cell research. His research primarily focused on leveraging single-cell transcriptomics to explore gene regulation, cellular heterogeneity in tumors, and the specification of cell identities during differentiation and in pluripotency. In recent work, they have developed Smart-seq3xpress, a method that allows for sensitive profiling of RNAs in individual cells, along with an RNA reconstruction strategy that facilitates the direct linking of counted RNAs to the allelic origin and transcript isoforms. Furthermore, their use of 4sU labeling to track newly transcribed nascent RNA (e.g. NASC-seq) at the single-cell level has enabled the monitoring of transcriptional dynamics with high temporal resolution.
