Which animals help us in research?

At MPI-IE we mainly work with mice, zebrafish and fruit flies.

Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)
There are more similarities between humans and flies than first thought. Humans share about 60 percent of their genes with Drosophila melanogaster. Learn more about what this important model organism of genetics is used for at MPI-IE.
Mouse (Mus musculus)
The mouse is an important laboratory animal in modern biology. Whether in immunobiology, genetics or epigenetics, the rodents' biological proximity to humans provides important insights into diseases as well as fundamental biological processes.
Zebrafish (Danio rerio)
The zebrafish is an important part of biomedical research. Particularly in developmental biology, but also increasingly in biomedical research, the results of scientific experiments with zebrafish serve to improve the diagnosis and therapy of diseases.
