Community
There are 60 doctoral researchers from over 20 countries on the IMPRS-EBM programme, making it a diverse and continually evolving community of talented researchers.
PhD Community
Our doctoral researchers form the cornerstone of the institute and contribute widely to scientific and social activities.
The biggest event of the PhD community calender is the annual PhD retreat, which takes place away from the regular working environment.
Doctoral representatives organise the retreat themselves, which allows them to tailor the retreat to the needs and requests of the current PhD community. Themes of the retreat often include networking with local student communities, scientific discussions, career development and community team building.
The Friday Gathering is a PhD student-led initiative, focusing on bringing the MPI-IE and IMPRS-EBM community together to hear about a topical science theme in a relaxed format. Themes have included the science of fear and laughter, and how best to fry a schnitzel or commit a crime!
Doctoral researchers have the opportunity to meet invited speakers in dedicated “meet the speaker” sessions for students and postdocs, as well as the opportunity to invite a speaker to the institute themselves.
IMPRS-EBM students collaborate with PhD students from different doctoral programs at the University of Freiburg to organise the annual career evening. Speakers, often alumni, from a variety of sectors are invited to talk about their career paths and have informal discussions with current students thinking about their next steps.
PhD Representatives
The PhD representatives form a bridge between the doctoral researcher community and the IMPRS-EBM management and steering committee.
The PhD representatives meet monthly to discuss issues and concerns in the PhD community, which can then be fed back to the IMPRS management team.
In this way, the PhD community can influence how the IMPRS program is run and develops over time.
The PhD representatives organise various social events, such as a welcome event for new students every year.
Support during your doctoral studies
The IMPRS Office is made up of the Program Coordinator and Program Assistant, who are responsible for the day-to-day running of the program. They are often the first point of call for students looking for support with the requirements and difficulties that come with undertaking a doctoral research project.
The MPI-IE gives scientists all the support they need so that they can focus on their research and can combine a research career with family life. Read more about our offers on our dedicated website.
