Inflammation or normal tissue development involves a lot of cells undergoing apoptosis on daily basis which need to be removed. This removal of apoptotic cells is performed by professional phagocytes such as macrophages through the process of efferocyosis. It is a sequential multistep mechanism that requires a well-coordinated metabolic network. There’s also a massive incoming metabolic burden from engulfed cell that the macrophages have to deal with in order to maintain their normal functioning. My project aims to understand the involvement of different metabolic pathways during efferocytosis, especially during resolution of the metabolic burden.
